CHORAL GROUP FROM UNIVERSITY OF DUSSELDORF, UNICHOR, PERFORMS IN TSUKUBA

On September 25, 2017, in commemoration of the partnership between the Universities of Tsukuba and Düsseldorf which started in 2016, a choral performance by the latter’s UNICHOR was held in Tsukuba City’s Capio Hall as part of UNICHOR’S Asian tour. The concert was also held as part of University of Tsukuba’s “Tsukuba Global Science Week”.

Professor Keiichi Aizawa of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Director of the Bonn Office of the University of Tsukuba served as master of ceremonies and interpreter, as Vice President Andrea von Hülsen-Esch of University of Düsseldorf and UNICHOR conductor Ms. Silke Löhr gave their remarks. The chorus of amazing voices presented by students, faculty, and staff comprising UNICHOR attracted an audience of over 170 people.

Prior to the performance, Vice President von Hülsen Esch made a courtesy visit to Caroline Benton, Vice President for Global Affairs of the University of Tsukuba. They discussed how to further expand exchanges between the two universities.

SESSION ON IB PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA’S ATTACHED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL HELD IN DÜSSELDORF

Mr. Yuichi Kumagai, International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator at the University of Tsukuba’s Senior High School at Sakado, held a briefing session on the IB program to students and parents who gathered at the Japanese International School in Dusseldorf (JISD) on September 18, 2017.

The university-attached Senior High School at Sakado, designated a “Super Global High School” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology since 2014, will be the first IB Diploma Certified School in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The Bonn Office will actively cooperate in holding such briefing sessions through its network of Japanese community and educational institutions in Europe.

UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA JOINS JAPAN DAY AT BOCHUM UNIVERSITY

Bochum University’s LSI (or Landesspracheninstitut) and the Consulate General of Japan in Düsseldorf hosted “Japan Day” last July 22, 2017. The University of Tsukuba participated in the event, aside from other Japanese cultural and business organizations in Germany.

Mr. Yusaku Nishijima, Bonn Office representative, talked about the university’s academic exchange activities in Germany. Associate Professor Yohei Yamamoto of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, who is currently conducting joint research in Germany, talked about his study on functional solid state chemistry.

Other participants to the event included students from our university who are studying abroad in Germany, as well as German students who went on exchange programs in Tsukuba.

BRIEFING SESSION ON STUDY ABROAD IN TSUKUBA FOR GERMAN STUDENTS

The University of Tsukuba Bonn Office organized a briefing session for students from the Free University of Berlin to prepare them for study abroad at the University of Tsukuba.

At the briefing session, Ms. Maria Pastukhova, a University of Tsukuba alumnae, gave explanations based on her study abroad experiences. Director Keiichi Aizawa of the Bonn Office talked about university procedures.

After the session, the Berlin Chapter of the University of Tsukuba Alumni Association held a meeting. About 20 people, including alumni and briefing session participants, attended.

BRIEFING SESSION HELD FOR STUDENTS FROM PARTNER UNIVERSITIES IN NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA, GERMANY

A briefing session was organized by the Bonn Office at the University of Bonn last June 12, 2017, for the benefit of nine students scheduled to study in Tsukuba. The students come from our partners in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) which include Bonn University, Cologne University, and Bochum University.

Talks were given by Director Keiichi Aizawa of the Bonn Office, as well as by two alumni: Mr. Andre Zerbe and Mr. Mike Tünker. Mr.Tünker also serves as an assistant at the Bonn Office.

After the briefing session, the Bonn Chapter of the University of Tsukuba Alumni Association held a meeting with about 25 people in attendance, including alumni and the participants at the briefing session.

PRESIDENT NAGATA PARTICIPATES IN 2017 HAMBURG TRANSNATIONAL UNIVERSITY LEADERS COUNCIL

On June 7-8, 2017, President Kyosuke Nagata participated in the 2017 Hamburg Transnational University Leaders Council held at the Körber Forum in Hamburg, Germany.

The biennial Council is organized jointly by the German Rector’s Conference, the Körber Foundation, and Universität Hamburg as a forum for presidents of the world’s leading universities to discuss current key issues in higher education. Approximately 50 university executives from around the world attended the 2017 Council, which was the second to be held after the inaugural meeting in 2015. President Nagata had attended the first meeting as well.

The 2017 Council was themed “Differentiation in the Post-Secondary Sector: a Response to Massification, Competition, and the Emergence of the Global Knowledge Economy”, and focused on challenges facing development of differentiated national higher education systems in an environment of rapid international expansion of post-secondary education.

On the final day, the Council developed and endorsed “The Hamburg Declaration: Organizing Higher Education for the 21st Century”, summarizing the conclusions of the 2017 discussions with a focus on the current state of global higher education, the role of research universities, and requirements for effective differentiation among post-secondary institutions.

PRESIDENT NAGATA PAYS VISIT TO PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF BOCHUM

On June 6, 2017, President Kyosuke Nagata paid a courtesy visit to Axel Schölmerich, president of the University of Bochum in Germany.In the meeting with President Schölmerich, Vice President Uta Hohn and faculty members from each research field at the University of Bochum participated. Discussions were held to expand future exchanges between the two universities, including presentations on important research fields of the University of Bochum and visits to state-of-the-art research facilities.

PRESIDENT NAGATA VISITS CYBERDYNE SUBSIDIARY COMPANY IN GERMANY

On June 6, 2017, President Kyosuke Nagata visited Cyberdyne Care Robotics, Inc. in Bochum City, Germany.The company is a subsidiary of Cyberdyne Co., Ltd., a venture company headed by Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai of the University of Tsukuba. Prof. Sankai is the Director of Cybernics Research Center, the company in charge of systems information, as well as promotion of the development of the medical robot suit “HAL” in Europe.

Apart from the University of Tsukuba, officials of Bochum City, Bochum University, Bochum Economic Promotion Association, as well as the Consul-General of Japan in Düsseldorf, participated in a meeting with the attending physician explaining about rehabilitation using HAL and watched a rehabilitation demonstration. More discussions were held among the participants on the future activities of the company in Europe as well as academic exchanges between Japanese and Germans.

SEMINAR ON JASSO SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD HELD

Director Keiichi Aizawa of the Bonn Office held a seminar to explain the scholarship program of JASSO last April 12, 2017. More than 30 students and faculty members participated. In the first half, ten students who studied at our partner universities in Europe, including Germany, for six months to one year under the JASSO program gave presentations on the purpose of studying abroad, their experiences and impressions.

In the second half, staff from the Student Exchange Division explained the structure of the JASSO support program, application procedures, and points to be noted. Professor Saburo Aoki of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences told the audience to be aware of what can possibly happen and take precautions in European countries undergoing transition now.

For students who wish to study abroad, it was a meaningful event to know not only the procedures necessary for study abroad, but also the preparation required such as language skills, and being responsible for risks on site.
