International Online Conference Held on Language Teaching Methods During the Pandemic

On April 16, 2021, the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages held an international scientific-practical online conference with the theme “Foreign Language Teaching Methods in the Age of Pandemic” with invited presenters from Uzbekistan and overseas. From the University of Tsukuba, Professor ONO Masaki, project leader of the “Project to Establish a Center for Training Japanese Language Teachers to Meet Social Needs” and director of the Almaty Office, gave a lecture on “Transforming Japanese Communication Skills for a New Era.” Dr. NINOMIYA Takashi, coordinator of the Almaty Office and a faculty member of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, also participated in the workshop.

Japanese Online Speech Contest Held in Kazakhstan

On March 13, 2021, the 23rd Kazakhstan Japanese Language Speech Contest was held under the joint sponsorship of the Kazakhstan Japanese Language Teachers Association and the Embassy of Japan in Kazakhstan. Sixteen students from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Ichikawa Japanese Language School, and the Kazakhstan-Japan Center for Human Development participated in the contest and delivered speeches in Japanese. The University of Tsukuba provided prizes to the participants of the speech contest as a sponsor of the event.

AL-FARABI CENTER OPENS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA

On December 22, 2020, the opening ceremony of the Al-Farabi Center was held at the University of Tsukuba. The relations between Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the University of Tsukuba started with the signing of an academic exchange agreement in 2007. In 2019, a Campus-in-Campus program agreement was signed. Under that program, an office of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University would be set up at the University of Tsukuba. The office would be to utilized this office as an Al-Farabi Center for developing educational and research exchanges between the two universities, based on the ideas of Al-Farabi “great thinker of the Orient”.

At the opening ceremony, President Kyosuke Nagata of the University of Tsukuba, Ambassador Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Japan, and Rector Galimkair Mutanov of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University expressed their congratulations. Rector Mutanov said that he is delighted to open the Al-Farabi Center during the 1150th birth anniversary of Abu Nasr Al-Farabi.

ONLINE LECTURE HELD FOR NAZARBAYEV INTELLECTUAL SCHOOL

On December 14, 2020, the University of Tsukuba and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held an online lecture to high school students of Nazarbayev Intellectual School. About 90 students and their parents participated.

Assistant Professor Sasayama, who was a coordinator of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project, Regional Office in Russia and CIS”, talked about the attractive points of studying at a Japanese university, and the programs of the University of Tsukuba. Similarly, Professor Ito Hironori (Office of Global Initiatives) gave a lecture in Japanese for the students.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Borankulova Samal (Senior Lecturer) and Ninomiya Takashi (Coordinator, Almaty Office) introduced the Japanese language course of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and explained study abroad procedures to Japan from the university.

KICK-OFF SYMPOSIUM HELD ON THE PROJECT OF “FORMING A BASE FOR TRAINING JAPANESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS WHO CAN RESPOND TO SOCIAL DEMANDS”

On November 14, 2020, the kick-off symposium on the project “Formation of a base for training Japanese language teachers who can respond to social demands” was held on online.

Prof. Ono Masaki, symposium organizer, explained the purpose of the symposium which was attended by representatives from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Cairo University, Uzbek State University of World Languages, and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The universities are closely related to the University of Tsukuba in terms of Japanese language education.

From Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Prof. Mukhambetkali Burkitbayev (First Vice-Rector) expressed his congratulatory remarks. In the keynote speech, Professor Emeritus Andrej Bekesh (University of Ljubljana) gave a lecture on the difficulty of online education surrounding Japanese society after the spread of Covid-19. After that, Ninomiya Takashi (Almaty Office Coordinator) provided a presentation on “Building joint education systems between Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Japanese universities”. About 80 people joined the symposium on the day.

CAMPUS-IN-CAMPUS (CIC) EDUCATION MANAGEMENT MEETING HELD ONLINE

The CiC Management-Level Meeting in Education was held on November 9, 2020 with representatives from the University of Tsukuba, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, University of Grenoble Alpes, University of California Irvine, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia participating.

From Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Prof. Assel Mussinova (Director, Institute of New Education Technology) and Ninomiya Takashi (Coordinator, Almaty Office, University of Tsukuba) attended the meeting. During the meeting, Prof. Mussinova explained the online education situation at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University where they use online platforms such as Zoom, Teams, and KazNU Univer. She focused on a system called Moocs.kz, a mixed online teaching platform with videos, assignments and tests built by 30 universities in Kazakhstan and two universities in Russia.

INTRODUCING THE ALMATY OFFICE IN CAREER DESIGN COURSE

On November 4, 2020, Ninomiya Takashi (University of Tsukuba Almaty Office Coordinator) gave a presentation during the lecture on “Introduction to Career Design” at the University of Tsukuba. He explained to about 100 undergraduate students the activities of the Almaty office in Kazakhstan and the effects of the Covid-19 infection on society and universities in Kazakhstan.

From Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Sailau Khakim (2nd year undergraduate student) and Umeshova Meryert (1st year master’s student) talked about their future plans after studying the Japanese language. Students from the University of Tsukuba asked questions such as “How did you study the local language (Kazakh)?”, and “What should you do if you get homesick?”

THE 7TH INTERNATIONAL CAMPUS-IN-CAMPUS BOARD-LEVEL MEETING HELD ONLINE

On October 21, 2020, representatives from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, National Taiwan University, Sao Paulo University, Utrecht University, University of Grenoble Alpes, Ohio State University, Bochum University, University of California Irvine, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia attended the 7th CiC Board-Level meeting. From Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Prof. Mukhambetkali Burkitbayev (First Vice-Rector), Abdyman Zhaniya (Office of International Program), and Ninomiya Takashi (Almaty Office Coordinator) participated.

At the meeting, agenda items included the virtual research unit, virtual student exchange program, and industry-university collaboration – various efforts undertaken since the outbreak of the new coronavirus. In the explanation of the virtual student exchange program, it was mentioned that 11 students from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have been taking Japanese and English courses at the University of Tsukuba from October 2020.

RESEARCHER MATCHING PROJECT 2020

On September 29-30, 2020, as part of Tsukuba Global Science Week, the Researcher Matching Project was held online. This is an initiative to promote collaborative research among Campus-in-Campus partner universities. Faculty members from the Faculty of Oriental Studies and the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University participated in the event. However, there is a need to promote the project within the university to increase the number of participants in this project next time.

JAPANESE ONLINE SPEECH CONTEST HELD IN KAZAKHSTAN

On September 5, 2020, the 22nd Japanese Online Speech Contest was held by the Kazakhstan Association of Teachers of Japanese.

Eleven students joined the speech contest representing the following institutions: Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Ichikawa Japanese Language School, and the Kazakhstan-Japan Center for Human Development.
