PROXY APPLICATION FOR CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY (COE)

The University of Tsukuba will lodge a proxy application with the Tokyo Immigration Bureau on behalf of those who are intending to engage in activities under “Professor” or “Cultural Activities” status of residence. The Global Commons, Bureau of Global Initiatives will lodge a proxy application at the request of the host teacher or host organization.

■ The host teacher or a faculty member of the host organization applies on the university’s form.

Deadline: 3 months before his/her arrival in Japan

After consulting with your host teacher, please prepare the necessary documents. Note that the university will also lodge applications for dependent family members of the applicant only if they are accompanied by the applicant and arrive in Japan at the same time. In this case, the status of residence a family member will be “Dependent.”

Position International faculty members, international researchers, part-time lecturers, etc. who are engaged in education and research activities under an employment contract with the University of Tsukuba.

Position Persons who come to Japan at the invitation of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) * Although international researchers invited by the JSPS have no employment agreement, the amount of their scholarships is substantial and is recognized as a form of remuneration. Therefore, such researchers are required to apply for “Professor” status of residence.

Position Visiting foreign research fellow who engage in academic or artistic activities without receiving any form of remuneration from the University of Tsukuba or any other Japanese education and research institution, and their period of stay is over 90 days.
Period of Stay 3 years, 1 year, 6 months or 3 months

Position This applies to spouses and dependent children who will stay in Japan over 90 days of persons whose status of residence is “Professor” or “Cultural Activities”.
