CAMPUS-IN-CAMPUS (CIC) PARTNERS HOLD ONLINE WORKING-LEVEL MEETING

On June 25, 2020, representatives from the University of Tsukuba, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, The Ohio State University, University of Grenoble Alpes, Utrecht University, and Ruhr-Universität Bochum participated in an online CiC Working-Level meeting among partners.

Aizhan Smailova (Director, Department of International Cooperation), Abdyman Zhaniya (Office of International Program), and Ninomiya Takashi (Almaty Office Coordinator, University of Tsukuba) represented Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Discussions at the meeting revolve around, each university’s physical or cyber countermeasures against Covid-19, future educational policies (for example, virtual study abroad, utilization of course jukebox), and future research policies.

UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA JOINS BEGIN GROUP’S ONLINE EDUCATION FAIR

On June 9, 2020, the University of Tsukuba participated in an online education fair (for students in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The event was organized by the Begin Group, a German-based company that supports student recruitment activities.

Faculty and staff of the university participated in the faire as part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project” and they explained how to study abroad at Japanese universities and graduate schools. About 50 organizations from all over the world participated on the day.

ONLINE MEETING SESSIONS ON THE CENTER FOR JAPANESE LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH TEACHER TRAINING IN ASIA AND AFRICA

The University of Tsukuba was selected as a core organization of “The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Core-to-Core Program, B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms”, and Prof. Ono Masaki (Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences) was selected as the coordinator of this project.

On April 10, 2020, Prof. Ono explained the aim of the project “Formation of a base for training Japanese language teachers who can respond to social demands” to faculty members of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Cairo University, Uzbek State University of World Languages, and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

As part of this research project, the challenges of Japanese language education in Egypt, Uzbekistan, etc. were presented. On June 19, 2020, Takashi Ninomiya (University of Tsukuba, Almaty Office Coordinator) gave a presentation about the status and future vision of Japanese language teachers in Kazakhstan.

6TH INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FORUM HELD IN KAZAKHSTAN

On March 12, 2020, the 6th International Student Forum was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University’s Department of Oriental Studies in Kazakhstan. The purpose of this forum is for students to present social issues in the foreign language they are learning.

The theme of this year’s forum was on “SDGs Goal No.9: Industry innovation and infrastructure in Japan and Kazakhstan”. Topics generally covered at the annual forum include foreign language learning methods, gender issues, tourism and other social problems.

2020 RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TRAINING IN KAZAKHSTAN

From February 15 to March 8, 2020, 14 students from the University of Tsukuba and 11 students from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies participated in a Russian language training course conducted at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Kazakhstan.

Apart from the language course, other activities such as sightseeing tours, lectures in Kazakh traditional cultures, and homestays were also organized for an enriching experience.

CIC DISCUSSION MEETINGS HELD AT KAZNU

On January 28, 2020, Prof. Higashi Teruo and Dr. Marko Stoic of the University of Tsukuba visited Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) to exchange views on the future development of the Campus-in-Campus program.

They met with Prof. Burkitbayev Mukhambetlaki, First Vice-Rector; Prof. Ramazanov Tlekkabul, Vice-Rector for Research-Innovation Affairs; and Prof. Vitaliy Salnikov, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environment. They also discussed a joint research / education program for mountain research at the University of Tsukuba and KazNU.

At the meeting, Prof. Alexander M. Artemyev, Head of the department of Recreation Geography and Tourism; Prof. Polyakova Svetlana, Head of the department of Meteorology and Hydrology; and Prof. Bazarbayeva Tursynkul, Head of UNESCO department, discussed their respective research topics.

Recent activities held in Kazakhstan pertaining to recruiting excellent students to the University of Tsukuba mainly through its Almaty Office were as follows:

  1. Lecture visit to No. 140 Gymnasium named after Mukagali Makataev in Almaty on January 23, 2020, led by Almaty Office Coordinator, Ninomiya Takashi, and Borankulova Samal of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU).
  2. Lecture visits to five high schools in Atyrau in western Kazakhstan on January 29 -30, 2020 with Ninomiya Takashi, Boranlulova Samal, and Mahdi Katsumata Shah (representing the University of Tsukuba’s Office of Global Initiatives), with the five high schools listed as follows:

2ND WORLD EDUCATION FORUM HELD IN KAZAKHSTAN

On December 6, 2019, the 2nd World Education Forum organized by Qazaq Media Group was held at the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University. About 150 primary and secondary school teachers in Kazakhstan participated in this event.

Ninomiya Takashi of the University of Tsukuba Almaty Office at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University talked about the unique features of the Japanese education system, such as nutrition education and school cleaning voluntarily done by students. Outstanding teachers were provided scholarships by Ms. Medina Rei, one of the organizers.

CAREER DESIGN CLASS: ABOUT WORKING ABROAD

On November 13, 2019, Ninomiya Takashi (Coordinator, University of Tsukuba Almaty Office) introduced his workplace to students via a live video talk as part of the “Introduction to Career Design” class at the University of Tsukuba.

He talked about the working and living environment in Kazakhstan, his tasks and duties as coordinator as well as the appeal of working abroad and offered some advice. He also mentioned possible career paths for Kazakh students learning Japanese and Japanese students learning Russian. Students who attended the class inquired about the challenges of his job as coordinator.

JAPAN STUDY FAIR IN KAZAKHSTAN

On October 27th and 29th, the Japan Study Fair organized by Kazakhstan-Japan Center for Human Development was held in Almaty and Nur-Sultan. The representative of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), Ninomiya Takashi, who is an invited professor at the Faculty of Oriental Studies and a coordinator of the Almaty Office in the Uniniversity of Tsukuba, participated the study fair.

One hundred fifty participants participated in the Almaty venue (at Almaty Hotel) and about 150 people participated in the Nur Sultan venue (at IQ coworking). As the coordinator of Almaty office, he explained English programs of International relations, IT, medicine and Japanese language courses at the University of Tsukuba. He also explained how to enter a Japanese language course at KazNU and then study abroad at a Japanese university, and how to enter a Japanese graduate school while studying at KazNU. Participants were not only high school students, university students, graduate students, but also the parents of the high school students.
