On December 18th, 2013, the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba and the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) signed an agreement to open an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the MJIIT campus.
The Kuala Lumpur Office of the University of Tsukuba serves as a base to further promote institutional exchanges and cooperation in Southeast Asia, taking advantage of the University of Tsukuba’s specialty in the field of environmental science and disaster risk management. The collaboration between the university and MJIIT also encourages the mobility of staff and students in education and research. Since 2017 when the University of Tsukuba and MJIIT started offering the Joint Master’s Degree Program in Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, the Kuala Lumpur Office has been working as a hub for accepting students from Tsukuba and sending out students from MJIIT. Additionally, the Office functions as a contact point for Malaysian alumni as well as Japanese alumni in Malaysia.
MJIIT was established on the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) International campus in the capital of Kuala Lumpur in June 2012 with support from the Japanese government. As an international hub, MJIIT aims to cultivate high-quality human resources in the sciences, looking for individuals with applied skills and research developmental capacities. Twenty-seven universities, including the University of Tsukuba, cooperate closely as members of the consortium of MJIIT support universities along with governmental institutions and industries.
