ART NIGHT IN KAZAKHSTAN

On October 25, 2019, an event called “Art Night” was held at the State Children’s Library named after Begalin. Ninomiya Takashi, a Japanese visiting professor of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University’s Department of the Far East, attended the event. He conducted trial lessons in origami. Along with Kazakh students having studied at the University of Tsukuba and Osaka University, students from Japan who were studying Russian at KazNU also took an active part in the lesson.

Kazakh children were very pleased to make paper cranes with their own hands. The paper crane represents people’s wishes for peace. Aside from the paper crane, they also learned how to make the Samurai headdress “Kabuto”. The number of interested children was about 200. This event provided Japanese students the opportunity to practice the Russian language with Kazakh or Russian children.

A VISIT TO KAZNU BY THE OFFICIAL REPRERESENTATIVES OF JAPANESE UNIVERSITIES

On October 10th, 2019, a delegation of officials representing a Japanese university and the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) visited the University of Tsukuba Almaty Office in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Kazakh National University. The delegation included Prof. Nakamura Koichi of the Kyoto University of Advanced Sciences, Assistant Manager Tanaka Shigehiro, Chief Administrative Officer Sumiyoshi Soichi of JASSO, and Suzuki Michiko, Advisor. Representatives from Kazakh National University consisted of the head of the Japan Studies Division, Yerlan Akhapov, senior lecturer Samal Borankulova, and invited professor Ninomiya Takashi. The delegation from Japan inquired about the educational situation of Kazakh National University, the state of Japanese language education, the research system, the status of scholarships, the entrance examination status of Kazakhstan, and the status of exchange programs with Japanese universities. The delegation expressed their interest to cooperate with the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Kazakh National University and that Japanese universities would like to take advantage of such opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY FAIR 2019

The International Study Fair 2019 sponsored by the Bolashaq Development Fund was held in Nur-Sultan, Shymkent, and Almaty from October 5th to October 12th.

The representative of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Ninomiya Takashi – an invited professor at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, participated the study fair. A huge amount of high school students, university students, and graduate students participated in this exhibition. The number of participants was 10,000 people at Nur-Sultan, 16,000 at Shymkent, and 17,000 at Almaty. Many different universities participated in the exhibition, not only Japan, South Korea, China, Russia, but also about 300 universities from Europe have also taken part.

The Almaty office of the University of Tsukuba explained general living conditions in Japan, introduction to faculties, and scholarships. It was also explained how to enter a Japanese language course at the Kazakh National University and then study abroad at a Japanese university, how to enter a Japanese graduate school while studying at the Kazakh National University. Participating students have a wide range of study fields, including computer science, engineering, international relations, business, medicine, and art design. The questions were mainly asked in English.

WELCOMING STUDENTS TO THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM IN KAZAKHSTAN

On September 20, 2019, a welcome party was held for the freshmen who entered the Japanese language course at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. There are 16 freshmen including Japanese students, three from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and two from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies. At the welcome party, Kazakh students who had studied at the University of Tsukuba, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and Waseda University shared their study abroad experiences. On that day, Vice President Caroline F. Benton, Prof. Higashi Teruo, and Prof. Ono Masaki from the University of Tsukuba participated as special guests.

TRAINING IN KAZAKHSTAN FOR UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA STAFF

On September 9-10, 2019, two officials of the Academic Service Office for the Library, Information and Media Sciences Area of the University of Tsukuba (Ms. DAITOKU Akiko and Ms. ONO Tomoko) visited the departments of student support services, entrance examination, and education at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and had meetings with several administrators of the said departments. They also visited the Kazakhstan-Japan Center for Human Development in Almaty.

The Almaty Office of the University of Tsukuba made arrangements for their visits and provided logistical support.

ONLINE CONFERENCE HELD BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA AND AL-FARABI KAZAKH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

The Online Conference between the University of Tsukuba and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) was held by Prof. Masaki Ono, director of Almaty Office, University of Tsukuba, at the Kazakh National University Headquarters Building on May 8, 2019.

Prof. Ono gave a lecture in “pragmatic research and Japanese language education” to faculty members and graduate students of KazNU. Lecture contents included the following: current situation of foreigners accepted in Japan, the history of foreign language education, interlanguages, pragmatics, and simple Japanese language.

ORIENTAL STUDIES OLYMPICS 2019 HELD IN KAZAKHSTAN

On March 28-29, 2019, the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) organized the “Oriental Studies Olympics 2019”. This competition is held every year and is open to students who are studying the social, historical, and cultural aspects of oriental countries (such as Turkey, India, China, Korea, and Japan) at the Oriental Studies Departments in Kazakh higher educational institutions.
