Message from the Director

University of Tsukuba is actively engaged in academic exchange between Japan and Germany across a wide range of fields, centered on partnerships with more than 20 German academic institutions. The Bochum Office plays a vital role in supporting this initiative by organizing academic events, facilitating researcher exchanges, and assisting international students. In collaboration with our overseas office in France, we also aim to promote broader academic exchange throughout Europe, beyond Germany.

Europe and Japan share deep connections in politics, economics, and culture, forming a crucial partnership that helps lead the international community. To sustain and strengthen this special relationship into the future, it is essential to deepen academic collaboration and foster talent capable of addressing global challenges together.

We warmly invite European stakeholders from academia, industry, and government who are interested in academic exchange with Japan, as well as members of the University of Tsukuba seeking collaboration with Europe, to reach out to the Bochum Office.

Prof. Dr. Akira Uedono
Professor, Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences
Director, Bochum Office

Tsukuba City and Bochum City

Tsukuba City, home to the University of Tsukuba’s main campus, and Bochum City, where the Bochum Office is located, signed an intercity partnership agreement in the field of science and technology in 2019. In 2025, a new agreement was concluded to promote cooperation in startup support between the two cities. These agreements, built upon the long-standing academic exchange between the University of Tsukuba and Ruhr University Bochum, aim to strengthen collaboration in areas such as the social implementation of science and technology, industrial development, and sustainable growth.

The Bochum Office also contributes to this positive relationship between the two cities by engaging in intercity exchange beyond academia, including initiatives in culture, sports, and industry-government-academia collaboration.
